12 different nations means that Sweden Offroad Tour is by far the most international 4x4 event in
Sweden. There where cars from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, England, Ireland,
Germany, Holland, France, Switzerland, Poland and Russia.
For the first time in Swedish offroad history a team from Russia took part. Oleg Logunov and
Olga Bassova drove all the way from Moscow in their old looking UAZ, which actually was of
1999 year model. They are both working for telecom company Ericsson and also visited its head
quarters in Stockholm.
– We liked the relaxed offroading in Sweden. Back home in Russia we are always competing and
hurrying on our meetings, says Olog.
Swedish record
22 offroad days means not only a record for Sweden, but probably also for Western Europe.
Sweden Offroad Tour is a real offroad-marathon! But only one (1) participant drove on all the 22
offroad days and that was englisman Michael Miles in his overloaded Range Rover 1990. Mr
Miles took part in the the whole tour for the third year in a row!
– No cheating! I really want to drive the whole tour - that's a real challenge! I love the northern
part of Sweden, Lapland, because there is so few people, says Michael Miles.
Sweden Offroad Toru was heavily covered by media. American Four Wheeler - the world's first
and most respected 4x4 magazine with one million readers - took part. Feature editor Michael
Rudd was very impressed by the variety of both cars and terrain during the tour.
- Wow! This was one of my best offroad experiences in my life so far! says Michael Rudd.
Brilliant idea
British Land Rover Owner International - Great Britain's largest offroad magazine - also
participated in the tour.
- The Sweden Offroad Tour concept is so brilliant that our magazine must copy it in Britain! It
would be perfect with a tour from Land's End to John O'Grootes, says editor David Phillips.
But the best thing about Sweden Offroad Tour is the people and the terrain. The tour is one long
offroad party with a large international "4x4-family" slowly moving north through Sweden. And
you never get tired of it because every day there is a new town, a new camping, a new offroad
area, new cars and new people - because participants can go on and of the tour when ever they
want - there is no pre -registration - come as you are!
Rainy summer
With 22 offroad days on 22 different military offroad areas all over the country, Sweden Offroad
Tour offers the best and most of offroading. The superior areas are Älvdalen and Boden in the
north of Sweden with their enormous areas and variety of terrain up to 765 meters high
mountains.
Although middle of Sweden experienced its rainiest summer in a century it was no problem for
Sweden Offroad Tour. The worse weather - the better offroading! The trails looked more like
creeks and the ground turned into one big layer of mud - with the 4x4 cars sliding around like
butter in hot fry pans!
But the Gods of weather where forgotten when they offered a perfect midnight sun in Kiruna, in
Sweden's northernmost town, way above the Arctic Circle!
The 6:th Sweden Offroad Tour is planned for June 30 - July 15 2001. You will find all info on
www.swedenoffroad.com or by calling organizer Peter Öjerskog on telephone +46 708 52 99 13.
Michael Rudd at Four Wheeler writes:
"As a journalist from Four Wheeler Magazine based in Los Angeles, California, I have covered
almost every type of off-road event imaginable, all over the world. Every event is unique; exotic
locales, interesting cultures and great people, in both competitive settings and sometimes more
relaxed trailrides.
Recently, I had the previlige to join Peter Öjerskog and his associates organizer of the Sweden
Offroad Tour as well as representatives from Mitsubishi Motors Sales Sweden for an exciting 23-
day four-wheel drive adventure to the land of The Midnight Sun.
This amazing event was designed for off-road enthusiasts with all levels of experience, from
novice to expert, and provided excitement for the entire family. Along the way, from Simrishamn
in the south to Kiruna in the far north, participants were able to fully enjoy the awesome four-
wheeling that their country has to offer.
Peter caters to the needs of everyone, and even provides offroad instruction for the folks with
little or no experience.
The group from Mitsubishi are fully involved as well, and offered their vehicles for people to test
drive.
All in all, I feel the Sweden Offroad Tour is one of the most succesful and enjoyable events I've
ever been part of and want to congratulate everyone who had the opportunity to share in this
fantastic European off-road adventure."
